McKeen’s 2022-23 Yearbook - It’s been over four years now since there was a Stanley Cup Final without Patrick Maroon in it. The 6-foot-3 winger is known around the league as one of the most lovable tough guys. His big frame makes him difficult to handle low in the offensive zone. He makes his money on the forecheck, screening the goalie, retrieving rebounds, and taking the puck to the net. He doesn’t have the skating ability or puck skills to play up the lineup, but he’s become extremely effective in his role. In the 587 minutes he spent with Corey Perry and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare last season at 5-on-5, the Lightning outscored their opponents 25-9. While Maroon only put up 27 points last season, he doesn’t need to be a producer.

McKeen’s 2018-19 Yearbook - Scouting: Hulking winger with keen awareness and good release .. rigids hands limit some puck carrying capability, can require support .. plodding skater lacks first two-step explosiveness, with a slushy stride that generates less than essential thrust .. skating adversely affects lateral agility, and upper body dexterity .. can cruise at high speed in straight lines, loses momentum in cuts and pivots .. strong upper body makes him a boards warrior, often winning stick battles on the strength in his arms .. stick prep in the offensive zone can be better – blade is often off the ice, used for balance .. well-defined net-front presence, occupying that space at every chance – difficult to move when planted, capitalizes on rebounds and tips .. telegraphs intentions by stop moving his feet and coasting into lanes and openings .. same applies when in a shooting position .. supports the cycle and assumes winger’s stance in defensive zone up high .. better as support in transition, instead of...

Analysis: Coming off a career-highs in 2016-17 (81-27-15-42), Patrick Maroon saw his goals drop in 2017-18, but maintained his overall production (74-17-26-43) .. on fire at the start of the season (12-4-6-10), but that ended up being one of his best stretches .. served a two-game suspension from Jan. 4-6 for an interference hit on Drew Doughty .. acquired by New Jersey from Edmonton on Feb. 29 .. went from averaging 17:04 minutes per game in Edmonton to 14:46 minutes with the Devils, but was still effective in New Jersey (17-3-10-13) .. shooting percentage went from 15.2% in 2016-17 to 12.1% in 2017-18 and his shots per game also declined from 2.20 in 2016-17 to 1.91 .. 5v5 expected goals differential and on-ice expected goals differential do suggest he underperformed, but only mildly .. signed a one-year contract with St. Louis over the summer, but there might not be a top-six role available for him there.

McKeen’s 2017-18 Yearbook - Scouting: Hulking winger with keen positional sense and good release .. hands are rigid as a puck carrier - can require support .. plodding skater lacks first two-step explosiveness, with a stride that generates less than essential thrust .. skating adversely affects lateral agility, and upper body dexterity .. straight line skater loses momentum cuts and pivots .. strong upper body – often winning stick battles on the strength in his arms .. stick prep in the offensive zone can be better – blade is often off the ice, used for balance .. a distinct net-front presence, making his way there at every chance – difficult to move when planted, capitalizing on rebounds and tips .. telegraphs intentions by stop moving his feet and coasting into his positioning .. same applies when he is in a shooting position .. supports the cycle and assumes winger’s stance in defensive zone positioning .. better as support in transition, instead of leading .. big-body presence. Analysis: Career highs in goals and points, playing the most minutes – mostly with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl (538 mins, 60.4 GF% & 52.7 CF%) .. 24 goals at 5v5 were sixth in the NHL- with the third highest shooting percentage among top ten in goals .. scored six goals in the first 14 games, then two in the next 18 .. hooked up with McDavid during a mid-Q2 line shuffle that would endure over the second half, scoring 10 goals in 12 games, including his first career hat trick .. scored nine goals over the final 36 games (36-9-8-17) .. ended the season contributing less individual shot attempts, going pointless over the final four games, and first four playoff games – finished with eight points in the final nine games (9-3-5-8) .. points on 35.7% of on-ice goals in secondary 5v4 minutes, could add some production next season .. flirts with 50 points, tops out mid-20s in goals.
15-16 Report/16-17 Outlook: Dealt to the Oilers in a deadline package that included a depth draft pick, the former Duck endeared himself to Oilers faithful riding shotgun with Connor McDavid and resurgent Jordan Eberle (69.2 GF% & 48 CF% on 13.04 sh% in 119 minutes) after a short stint with Leon Draisatl and Taylor Hall (66.7 GF% & 51.7 CF% in 35:59) .. he scored six 5v5 goals in the final quarter (16-6-4-10) on an inflated 17.65 sh%, and added two more at 5v4 (16-2-2-4) - all primary points .. bumped personal shooting percentage from measly 2.5% to end with 13.67% at 5v5 with subsequent increase in on-ice shooting percentage (from 4.65% at time of trade to end with 9.33%) .. noticeable increase in shot metrics after becoming an Oiler, including a jump in individual high danger scoring chances (from 0.25 to 1.31 peak) coinciding with increased scoring .. found instability with a variety of linemates in Anaheim, and posted dreadful results with most frequent linemate Cory Perry (36.8 GF% & 48.7 CF%) .. will present himself as a bargain with late season surge .. there are signs, but don’t get sucked in due to linemates.
