NHL Transactions Breakdowns

I started researching the Toronto Maple Leafs transactions under the Brian Burke regime, but the little project soon grew in scope as references raised more detailed questions.

The time frame is from Nov 29, 2008, the onset of the Brian Burke regime in Toronto. Even with the odd starting point, it's interesting to see what NHL teams have done in relation.

Below are a combination of different tables and charts, tackling transactions on a team-by-team basis. Note*** all data is provided by Pro Sports Transactions

Starting off is a breakdown of how many times teams have made trades with each other. During this period, the Anaheim Ducks made an NHL high 57 trades, with the Maple Leafs accounting for 11 swaps. Vancouver and Florida traded with each other six times, and the Coyotes made five trades with the NY Rangers.

The sheer complexity of this table made it best viewable in Google Docs for full effect.

Here's a team-by-team breakdown of teams trading with each other.

We can further break down the analysis, looking under specific criteria.

Some of those trades included a trade of picks for players. Below marks the number of times each team traded away a pick for player(s)

Teams # of Deals Teams # of Deals
Ducks 13 Canadiens 6
Panthers 11 Canucks 6
Rangers 10 Lightning 6
Flyers 10 Devils 6
Coyotes 10 Sharks 5
Capitals 9 Predators 5
Flames 9 Sabres 5
Blue Jackets 8 Avalanche 4
Senators 8 Islanders 4
Hurricanes 8 Oilers 3
Penguins 7 Stars 3
Bruins 7 Wild 3
Kings 7 Blackhawks 3
Maple Leafs 7 Blues 2
Thrashers/Jets 7 Red Wings 1

Alternatively, teams also traded players for picks. It was expected that teams like the Maple Leafs, Panthers, Hurricanes, Oilers and Ducks are among leaders in trades involving at least a pick coming back. But the Flyers?

Teams # of Deals Teams # of Deals
Ducks 14 Senators 6
Maple Leafs 13 Capitals 6
Panthers 10 Avalanche 6
Flyers 10 Islanders 6
Hurricanes 10 Sabres 5
Coyotes 9 Blues 5

Blackhawks 8 Canucks 4
Penguins 7 Wild 4
Blue Jackets 7 Rangers 4
Bruins 7 Flames 3
Thrashers/Jets 7 Devils 3
Predators 6 Red Wings 3
Sharks 6 Stars 2

The Flyers made 10 trades that involved a draft pick in this same timeframe. Trades involved picks across the spectrum of the draft, two firsts, sixths and , four seconds and thirds, one fourth and fifth round pick

Of course, there were the straight player for player swaps. Of note is that some of these trades were made for a swap of minor league players unlikely to make an impact at the NHL level. Still, as they are captured as trades, this is the breakdown per team.

Teams # of Deals Teams # of Deals
Ducks 25 Avalanche 10
Panthers 18 Canucks 9
Rangers 16 Hurricanes 8
Blue Jackets 16 Capitals 7

Here we have the number of draft picks - by round - NHL teams traded. These picks may have been traded away as part of a bigger deal, a late pick, or made in the effort to move up in the draft.
